For Cathy Neely, the calling to teach began long before she entered the profession. As a child, she would rush home from school eager to recreate the classroom experience.

"I went to school, came home and played school; I never wanted to miss a day," Neely said. That early passion never faded; instead, it grew into a career that feels less like a job and more like a calling.

Today, Neely brings that same enthusiasm to her classroom as a Head Start assistant teacher through the Mississippi State University Extension Service. Her approach is rooted in three core principles: showing respect to everyone, practicing active listening and building authentic relationships with students and their families.

"My favorite thing to do is inspire young minds. That's why I teach in a fun, creative way in a safe and positive environment," Neely said.

She creates this environment through child-led conversations, hands-on activities and incorporating music and play. These approaches meet young learners where they are and elevate their natural curiosity.

Among her many cherished memories, one stands out: working alongside children and their families to create a float for the spring parade.

"The memory of working together and seeing their creativity take flight is priceless," Neely said.

It's these moments, where learning extends beyond the classroom and into the community, that remind her why this work matters.

Outside the classroom, Neely stays connected to what brings her joy. Whether she's walking at sunrise, cooking for loved ones, spending time with her church family or traveling, she carries the same spirit of care that defines her teaching. As a mother of four and grandmother of eight, she understands firsthand that the impact of a caring educator lasts a lifetime.

"I enjoyed being my children's first teacher, and now I am so thankful for the opportunity to touch other lives."
